3 Simple Eco Ideas For New Apartment Dwellers

As a new apartment dweller you most likely have a million and one ideas on how to decorate, accessories and furnish your hot new pad. However many are looking for ways to save money and go green as well. The good news is that usually you can marry both - saving money and saving Mother Earth. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Let’s take a look at three good eco ideas aimed at new apartment dwellers. It doesn’t matter if you live in a tiny 400 square foot studio or a large 2,000 square foot McApartment, the ideas below can be tried by anyone and at anytime.

1. Smart Power Strip -

A good power strip surge protector, one that has a remote control function or an on/off button will help preserve your connected electronics, gadgets and or appliances. Instead of manually turning on and off your devices each night, you would only need to turn on and off your power strip. This leaves all gadgets plugged in but the power is shut off when you turn off the power strip. They’re inexpensive, readily available and can potentially save your devices as well, since with a bad storm you could lose all power in your home and this could ruin some of your connected devices. Try Amazon.com for a good Belkin or Tripp Lite power strip and surge protector, you should be able to score one that has up to 6 outlets with a 6 inch power cord for less than $20.

2. Lighting -

Many apartment owners underestimate the power of a good light bulb. You’ve probably read a million times in the last few years, how a CFL bulb will last you longer than a traditional bulb yet you still have not made the switch. You go to the drugstore and buy a box of the cheap bulbs for a buck only to replace them again in a bout two months, right? Well guess what, this is a vicious circle many find themselves in, so you’re not alone.

3. Drapes/Blinds -

The new home and apartment owners of today do not rely on drapes like our parents did, but those who do use them can leverage this product for max eco benefit. How? By the fabric you choose, the retailer you buy from and or the type of drapes and blinds you get. There are bamboo blinds which you can get that are durable and sexy yet keep bright Sunlight to a minimum, yet let natural light in when you want it. There are organic cotton or hemp drapes you can try that are both environmentally friendly and stylish. Look at designer brands such as Martha Stewart for good looking options.

As you can see the ideas above are simple, low cost and relatively easy to implement. Get your creative hat on and try one or two today and then come back here and let us know how it went. It’s not necessary to spend wads of money on going green or completely overhaul your space, a few adjustments here and there and you’re on your way to a greener (more earth-friendly) path.
