Whether you're preparing for an event, planning your annual family photo, or just getting ready for an average day at the office, you always want to look your best. And while you probably have a long-standing makeup routine already in place, you might be surprised to learn that you can drastically improve the regimen you've observed for time immemorial by working new products and techniques into your beauty lineup. For one thing, our skin changes as we get older, which means that as you move out of your teens and into your twenties, thirties, and beyond, your makeup needs are going to change. So here are just a few tips to help you ensure that your makeup helps you to look amazing at any age.

- Visit a beautician. The first step for most women is to get some professional help. Even DIY requires a springboard, and since info on the internet is sketchy at best, you need to start with some solid advice that is customized to your needs. So think about stopping by a beauty counter or calling a professional beautician for a private consultation. You might be amazed to learn how much better you could look with just a few simple changes to your routine, and these beauty pros can help you to find the products that will work for you, not only in terms of makeup (colors and compositions alike), but also concerning all of your skincare needs, from cleansers and moisturizers to mud masks and sunblock.
- Consider primer. A step that most women skip is the application of primer. And while primer is not necessarily essential to flawless makeup application, it certainly helps. The idea behind using a primer is that it has the ability to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tome, and provide a stable base for makeup application. The result is a smooth surface on which to apply your makeup, resulting in skin that looks virtually perfect when finished. In addition, primer ensures that your makeup stays put much longer, reducing shine, buildup in creases, and the need for constant reapplication.

- Highlight one key feature. Some women are minimalists when it comes to makeup while others go way overboard with gaudy colors and heavy application. But the most attractive finishes strike a balance between the two. So start with the lightest foundation possible (that still achieves the coverage you require) and then highlight one key feature (either your eyes or your lips). If you prefer a lot of color on your eye, simply go with a nude (or natural) lip and a sheer tint on your cheeks (for that young, fresh look). Or alternately, stick to mascara and a neutral tone on lids while planting a pop of color on your kisser. This will create a sophisticated and attractive look.
- Splurge vs. save. Not every product that touches your face has to cost a fortune. But if you want a flawless finish there are certain items you'll want to splurge on, namely your moisturizer and your foundation since these two products sink into your skin and form the basis for the rest of your makeup routine.
- Work with what you've got. Since you're well past the stage in life where you'd be shopping for prom dresses, chances are good that it's high time for a change to your established makeup routine. In fact, you should revisit the subject every 5-10 years if you want to stay up-to-date with your skincare needs, as well as changing trends. There's just no getting around the fact that skin changes and presents new challenges as you age. So if you want to look your best, make sure you're using the makeup that's right for your stage in life and the condition of your skin today.
