How To Make The Most Of Your Christmas Holiday Time With The Kids

By: Grace Pamer

As Christmas draws near, the prospect of some much needed time off work comes into focus. For the best part of two weeks the kids will loiter around the house while I contemplate the best way to keep them entertained during the Christmas break. I also want to spend as much quality time as possible with my kids as I know it will all pass in a flash. So I have made a checklist of possible ways to have a fun break with the kids this Christmas and get the most out of this exciting time of year.

Decorate the house together. Decorating the house is the first trick up my sleeve. What is Christmas without the dancing lights, the towering Christmas tree and the lanterns of various sizes? And the prospect of doing it on your own is definitely boring so why not get the kids involved and let their imagination and creativity run wild.

Christmas Eve cookathon. Christmas Eve is the perfect day to keep your kids occupied with cooking and food preparation. Given your kids will no doubt be horsing around the kitchen at some point be sure to snatch up those willing hands and convert their energy into something useful whether that's mixing the cake, adding icing, whisking or whatever. This is always a great reason to bond and spend time together.

T-shirt painting. For a non-Christmas related activity which is still a lot of fun, why not turn your hand to t-shirt painting? Teach them how to make use of scrap materials and get them to design their very own t-shirts. You can use acrylic paint, glue, beads and whatever other tools you have to hand. It’s a great way to harness their innate ingenuity.

Do a spot of sightseeing. Of course, you should always include a little sightseeing with your kids. Plan some nice long walks in the forest, parks, the beach or whatever else you have available under an hour’s drive. You could even try museums if your kids are so inclined. You can also include their friends and their moms and make it a big day out.

Star gazing. Yes its cold and yes it’s cozier in doors but you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see the stars. Star gazing is a great way to bond because of the challenge it poses, especially in the city. So after dinner one night why not all head to the park or big outdoor area and take in the beauty of the heavens together. You can even swat up on some of the constellations to really impress your kids.

Christmas party. Finally and last but not least why not plan a Christmas party? Organizing your own party is always a fun thing to get your kids involved with. Ask your husband, partner or good friend to take on the role of Santa Claus and stuff his clothes with foam and cotton to give him that true Santa belly (that is if he’s not already got one of his own!). Keep this part secret from your kids and make a surprise appearance at the party. It will be well worth it for the look on your kids faces as they try and work out why Old Nick looks so familiar!

Love these ideas!  Nice to see fresh ones after doing the same things for a few years.

These are some wonderful ideas! I just might try the t-shirt painting, we'll see if my 11yr old (thinks shes 16) thinks that craft would be cool to do :) I also like to send my younger two around the house for a scavenger hunt, they love to see who wins and winning a prize of course!
