Overview
Surgical menopause occurs when a woman has a hysterectomy that involves removing both of her ovaries. Typically, a hysterectomy is preformed on woman that has related health issues, such as ovarian cancer, or endometriosis, The ovaries are responsible for your menstrual cycle. Once the ovaries are removed, your menstrual cycle will cease. The ovaries also produce estrogen, the natural hormone found in woman. Having a hysterectomy will reduce the amount of estrogen your body naturally produces. Many woman find the need to replace their lost hormones, either naturally, or by using prescriptions hormone replacement medication.
Treatment
Step 1
Women who have had a hysterectomy may begin to experience symptoms associated with hormone loss shortly after the procedure. Vaginal dryness, thinning of your hair, hot flashes, sleep disturbances and a decrease in breast fullness are all symptoms most woman experience from menopause. It is important to maintain a good diet, and one that is high in vitamin D in order to decrease the risk of osteoporosis. Eating high fiber foods such as fresh fruits, nuts, whole wheat and fresh vegetables will help your body maintain more energy. Many woman experience a loss of energy after menopause.
Step 2
The replacement of estrogen through prescription medication, such as premarin may help relieve hot flashes associated with menopause. Vaginal dryness due to estrogen loss is a common complaint in menopausal woman. Your doctor can help you decided if you need topical estrogen therapy. For bone loss due to decreased levels of estrogen, non-hormonal therapy such as Actonel and Bonival may be prescribed by your physician in order to prevent osteoporosis (bone loss).
Step 3
If taking hormone replacement is not an option for you, either due to medical or personal reason, Venlafazine, an antidepressant may help relieve hot flashes. If you experience high blood pressure, medication such as Neurontin, may be prescribed to help reduce the occurrence of hot flashes. Additionally, natural treatment for menopause such as black snake root, squaw root and rattle weed supplements may help reduce hot flashes. For night sweets, kava, kave root may help lessen the frequency.
