Overview
Salmonella is a communicable, bacterial infection that lives in the intestines and can be passed from animal to human through feces. Humans usually become infected by eating or drinking contaminated meat or water.

Contaminated Digestables
Contamination through feces to food and water is the main source of salmonella bacteria. Raw eggs, undercooked meat and vegetables washed in contaminated water are often the source of salmonella.
Cross-Contamination
Contamination of food and water can also occur with cross-contamination. When infected individuals fail to wash their hands after using the restroom, anything they touch can become contaminated.
Symptoms
Symptoms of salmonella infection may include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.
Treatment
Most individuals infected with salmonella will recover without treatment in approximately 4 to 7 days. Some individuals may require medical treatment. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics and anti-diarrhea medication.
Prevention
Wash hands with soap and water before eating, after using the restroom and after handling raw foods.
