Mum's Home Business as a Great Emerging Market

Women around the world have always been industrious, creative, and headstrong. These characteristics are instilled in all females, as they are necessary when raising a family. Rearing children, caring for the home, and supporting the family unit as a whole requires the ability to juggle multiple tasks while remaining calm and collected. Many mothers are using these skills to start their own home businesses. In fact, home businesses are one of the largest emerging markets today.

One such example of a woman who started her own business in order to be able to work from her home and spend more time with her child is Sandra Wilson. In 1994, the Vancouver, British Columbia based Wilson developed a new type of child’s shoe, which she then began to sell. Today, the shoe known as Robeez has been purchased by Stride Rite and is sold throughout Europe and North America.

Of course, successful mumtrepeneurs do not have to have a product in order to be successful. Yana Berlin, from San Diego, California, launched the social network Fabulously40 and Beyond, in 2006. By 2009, she was named the Leading Moms in Business winner by Startup Nation and the social network is still going strong today.

Starting an online business begins with the fundamentals: a business plan and a small investment. There are numerous niche markets that are waiting for an entrepreneur, but without careful planning, a smart strategy, and industrious follow through, the business itself cannot succeed.

The first step in starting an online business is finding the right fit. Some women discover that entering into an already established brand is the best way for them to achieve success. Many home based businesses are structured around the party plan, which is a direct sales method that gives mothers a chance to sell their wares while they socialise. Products that are sold in this method include cosmetics, household goods, educational toys, foods, and lingerie, to name a few.

Other mothers choose to go their own route. Reselling of pre-manufactured goods on auction web sites is a wise route for some. Others may choose to sell items that they have created themselves, such as crafts, accessories, or baked goods. Still others choose to advertise services like home organisation or party planning. Whatever route a mother chooses to go, she must be willing and able to put in the long difficult hours to establish herself in the online world. This often involves employing a web designer or learning how to create a web site that looks professional and can convey to the world the services or products offered. Advertising is also a must. Women must be aware of SEO techniques, the importance of blogging, and advertising on social networking sites.

Once a web page has been established and advertising is underway, the real work begins. A successful work-from-home mother must be efficient with time management. She must juggle her family responsibilities with her working responsibilities in a way that is much different from mothers who work outside of the home. Unless a stay at home mother can employ a nanny or utilise day care at least part time, she will likely have to perform her working responsibilities while the children nap or play.

This is not to say that it is not possible for mothers to be successful business people while they stay home with their children. On the contrary, because a mother is already embroiled in the world of multi-tasking and problem-solving, she may be the best business person around.
