From the moment they are born, children are extremely impressionable. Even before they hit their adolescence, they start to form their opinions, core values and the way they view the world in general based on the things they see around them. This is a critical time period for teaching values because many children can’t explain why they believe certain things, but that viewpoint will likely stick with them for years and even a lifetime. This is why it’s never too early to begin teaching children how to become caring, confident and respectful of those around them.
What are Values?
Values are certain beliefs that are important to a particular individual that are often
integrated into their family life, work, social life and pretty much everything they do. If you want your child to share the same values as you or at least cultivate their own set of values that represent good character, then it’s important to lead by example. If you expect your child to respect others, then you must respect others; whatever you wish to instill in your child, you must be willing to have yourself or the child will notice the hypocrisy.
Purpose and Clarity
Helping children cultivate a strong character at a young age has never been more important. A child develops values by social and cultural imprints. If left without a good foundation of what values and good moral character look like, it could result negatively with the child’s motivations and sense of right and wrong. Values and respect are essential for a young child because it gives them purpose and clarity and encourages healthy brain development and growth.
It’s no secret that there has been a moral decline in the family unit as
the years go on- whether this decline is caused by the rising hostility of society or because of particular family dynamics. In order for civilization to survive, it’s imperative that we teach our children worthy values that reflect kindness, respect and good moral character. Children are our future generation and embracing good values into their overall behavior and daily life will not only help them succeed, but it will also help our nation and our world become a better place.
